Zaanse schans
- Our journey begins in the historic heart of Amsterdam, sailing across the IJ past the creative and industrial waterfront of the NDSM-werf. From there, we continue north toward the Zaanse Schans, where history comes alive along the River Zaan. 2 Hour stop.
-
River the Zaan
- From Zaanse Schans, the River Zaan winds northward through historic industrial landscapes, passing the towns of Wormerveer and Zaanstad, where old warehouses and classic Dutch homes line the waterfront. As the river gradually widens and the scenery opens into vast green polders and it gently flows onward toward the peaceful waters of the Alkmaardermeer.
-
Polders and Prumerend
- The Beemster polder, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a masterpiece of 17th-century land reclamation, laid out in a perfect geometric pattern of fields, canals, and farmhouses reclaimed from the sea. Near Purmerend, the surrounding polders stretch wide and low beneath the dikes, offering the unique sensation of sailing above the land in one of the Netherlands’ most iconic reclaimed landscapes.
-
Back to Amsterdam
- From Purmerend, the Noordhollandsch Kanaal runs straight and calm through wide open polders, lined with dikes, grazing cattle, and distant church towers. As you approach Amsterdam, the rural landscape gradually gives way to busier waterways and historic city views, marking a graceful return to the capital.
